Business as usual at Centrality

COVID-19 has impacted our world for sure but as a digital business who's used to working in virtual environments, we are keeping things moving along.

In New Zealand, our home base, we are now in a national lockdown and our priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of our team, so we're working from home and continue to BUIDL. We stay connected and are still tracking well against our tech roadmap, powering ahead with our plan to deliver the Mainnet V1.0 release.

It's our priority now to keep our community safe, so we're bringing our events online.

Centrality is organising the Rust meetup on 6 April where we will show you how to easily wrap C libraries using bindgen to give you access to all of the power of the C ecosystem from the safety and convenience of the Rust programming environment. Everyone is welcome to join us on Zoom at 6 pm — 8 pm UTC +13.

Working from home has been no problem for our ventures and many of them have made great progress and partnerships:

Iomob

Iomob was profiled in Intelligent Transport as an innovator with respect to how the mobility sector is responding to COVID19 by factoring in the social distance into their Mobility as a Service algorithms.

The company decided to support intermodal journey options in 'lockdown' areas for users who must move around for essential or emergency purposes during pandemics. The project includes:

1. Introduction of a new social distance filter
2. Delivery of services where a user can discover, book and pay for the service inside the MaaS app without having to interact with a machine or driver for payment
3. Introduction of a new crowdsourcing feature so that users can provide real-time updates on the crowd levels in mass transit vehicles so that algorithms can filter out those services which threaten social distance recommendations.

They anticipate deploying these features in the coming months for up to five governments in Europe and beyond.

Yabble

Yabble is delighted to announce they're working with Rob Vickery at Hillfarrance Venture Capitalas lead investor for their first $2m capital raise. In speaking to NBR this week, Vickery said "we still want to do the same size round though it may take a bit longer to close. The company has all the right things going on with it."

Vickery said the research was remarkably resilient in downturns and recessions because businesses still needed to make decisions. "This is a different type of downturn and one where you can't do focus groups and big group customer sentiment analyses so Yabble becomes even more indispensable as it is all done digitally." Binance buys CoinMarketCap / SEC delays tZERO's security token exchange / Microsoft servers hijacked to mine crypto

Binance has acquired CoinMarketCap. The crypto exchange has signed on the dotted line and bought the data site for an undisclosed sum; however, previous reports have suggested that it was as much as $400 million. The landmark deal was announced by Binance earlier today. According to the platform, the joining of the two "introduces some significant opportunities to grow the industry even further." Binance CEO, Changpeng Zhao, said: The core DNA of CoinMarketCap is strongly aligned with Binance’s ethics and culture, from its integrity to its value of freedom, transparency and user-focus. Our common vision will be strengthened by this acquisition to further growth and instill transparency in the industry. This will enable us to build on each other’s strengths, jointly serving as infrastructure providers of crypto. See also: Binance is set to acquire CoinMarketCap, the deal could be worth as much as $400 million Even though Binance will be working more closely with CoinMarketCap, it will continue to run as an independent business entity. It goes on to note that while the exchange and its native token BNB are listed on CoinMarketCap, the two will function as separate entities, maintaining a strict policy of independence from one another. "As part of the transition, CoinMarketCap founder Brandon Chez is stepping down as CEO, to focus on his family after seven years of running the company, but will remain as an advisor," Binance said. Further reading: Binance to launch its first Bitcoin mining pool: The company has hired specialists to work at the mining pool, some of which previously worked at Bitmain. The launch is expected in Q2 2020. Binance removes FTX leveraged tokens: The platform has delisted the tokens after stating that there was a "lack of understanding" among users as to how they worked. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has delayed its decision on tZERO's proposed security token exchange. In a letter published yesterday, the SEC noted that it was looking for more comments on the Boston Security Token Exchange (BSTX), which aims to provide a regulated trading platform for security tokens. Throwback Thursday It's Thursday again, so it must be Throwback Thursday. Today I look back at the crypto ban India's central bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), placed on the sale or purchase of cryptocurrency. According to a document published by the RBI April 5, 2018, it read: In view of the associated risks, it has been decided that, with immediate effect, entities regulated by RBI shall not deal with or provide services to any individual or business entities dealing with or settling [virtual currencies]. Regulated entities which already provide such services shall exit the relationship within a specified time. A circular in this regard is being issued separately. The RBI had given banks three months to cease relationships. As a result, it left India's crypto exchanges in a state of turmoil. Sathvik Vishwanath, the co-founder of Unocoin, said: "No other player in India was foreseeing this, and it comes as a shock. People are trying to exit as they feel they won't be able to cash out after three months." Last year, with India close to implementing a blanket ban on crypto, venture capitalist Tim Draper said that it was "akin to the Luddites" and that it would set the country "back 40 years." Fast-forward to 2020, and an intervention from India's Supreme Court has seen the crypto ban being revoked. At the beginning of March, the bench, headed by Justice Rohinton F. Nariman, overruled the central bank’s circular on the grounds of disproportionality. Nischal Shetty, founder and CEO of crypto exchange WazirX, said that it was a "historic day for crypto in India," adding "we can now innovate. The entire country can participate in the blockchain revolution."

Microsoft servers are being hijacked to mine crypto. A report published by the Guardicore Labs team has discovered a long-running campaign, which aims to infect Microsoft machines running MS-SQL servers to mine cryptocurrency. A report from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) states that the U.S. has "minor deficiencies" when following its crypto recommendations. In its 12-page report, "Anti-money Laundering and Counter-terrorist Financing Measures," the global money-laundering watchdog points out that while the U.S. has met or mostly met its recommendations, "minor deficiencies" remain. A report suggests that the coronavirus pandemic has had an impact on the consumer side of Bitcoin. In a report published at the end of March, Chainalysis looked at the effect of COVID-19 on the consumer side of Bitcoin by determining how transaction patterns have changed across three service areas: merchant services, gambling services, and darknet markets. Revolut brings Bitcoin to all its users. In light of governments worldwide offering COVID-19 rescue packages, fintech company Revolut has said that it is offering crypto as an alternative to all its users. With its website claiming it has over 10 million customers, Revolut made the announcement via an email to its customers. In it, it said: During a recent presentation, our Head of Crypto, Edward Cooper, reminded us that cryptocurrencies came about as an alternative to real money during the times of quantitative easing and currency devaluation following the 2018 financial crisis. Given the recent economic upset, we are starting to see quantitative easing and currency devaluation happening again right now. See also: British fintech Revolut launches banking app in U.S. It went on to say that it had planned to make this official later this year; however, in light of the current climate it has decided to give its customers the opportunity "to explore different ways of diversifying, including through crypto, right now." As per the email, all Revolut standard users will now be able to access its crypto feature. Its gold feature will be available to standard users later in April. For now, the platform is keeping its crypto pricing the same for standard customers as it is for premium and metal users. For the month of April, this will be a flat fee of 1.5 percent per trade. In May, this will increase to 2.5 percent per trade for all standard users; however, this doesn't apply to premium or metal customers. REVOLUT

Max Keiser has predicted that people will flock to Bitcoin because there will be no gold due to COVID-19.
