NEW MESSAGE: Telegram Open Network, or TON, the ambitious blockchain project announced last year by the Telegram messaging app, is expected to release the code needed to run a TON node on Sept. 1, according to two individuals familiar with the project. To date, there has been only one operational node – run by Telegram itself – on TON’s test network. With the upcoming code release, a broader range of users will be able to run their own nodes. Users can only run nodes on testnet, with a mainnet launch expected for Oct. 31, according to the purchase agreement for Telegram’s 2018 token sale. Full story
 
COUNCIL ADD: Hedera Hashgraph, a blockchain-like public network for enterprises, is adding the U.S. financial giant FIS Global to its governing council. Announced Thursday, FIS Global is the ninth addition to Hedera’s 39-member council, which oversees the distributed ledger technology used to facilitate micropayments, distribute file storage and support smart contracts, and will allow private networks to plug into the public one to take advantage of its transaction ordering mechanism. Hedera also announced it intends to launch its mainnet in beta on Sept. 16. Full story

BTC RUN: A group of bitcoin enthusiasts ran, biked and swam across Europe to promote the cryptocurrency they believe is leaving a powerful, positive mark on the world. The first “Satoshi Freeathlon” officially finished this weekend, in which a group of seven bitcoin enthusiasts journeyed from Switzerland’s “Crypto Valley” in the tiny city of Zug, Switzerland, to Munich, Germany. Running purely on bitcoin donations, the loose group dubbed “Team Satoshi” embarked on the quest in an attempt to raise positive awareness of bitcoin. Full story

BLOCKCHAIN BENEFITS: MorningStar Japan a subsidiary of investments giant SBI Holdings, will pay out benefits in the third largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, XRP. According to a company statement released Wednesday, Morningstar shareholders will receive 30 XRP, if they own 100 or more shares of stock, as part of an intermediary shareholder benefit program. The firm commented in the release that global remittance tool XRP, “will be one of the important asset classes in asset management.” Full story
 
CRYPTO CLASS: Academic interest in crypto and blockchain is increasing across the board, according to a study from Coinbase published Wednesday. The crypto exchange looked at the world’s top 50 universities (according to the U.S. News & World Report ranking) and found that 56 percent have blockchain or crypto classes available, up from last year’s 42 percent. Further, working with survey site Qriously, Coinbase also surveyed 735 students ages 16 and older, finding a 6 percent uptick in student interest in crypto or blockchain coursework. As part of last year’s Coinbase study, 28 percent of respondents said they would be interested in such a class. Full story
BEARISH BULWARK: Bitcoin could drop to $9,000 in the next 24 hours, having strengthened the short-term bearish case with a drop to one-month lows earlier today. The top cryptocurrency by market value fell to $9,320 at 07:36 UTC today, the lowest level since July 28, according to Bitstamp data, following a 4.48 percent drop on Wednesday, confirming a downside break of a recent narrowing price range represented by trendlines connecting Aug. 20 and Aug. 26 highs and Aug. 15 and Aug. 22 lows. Essentially, sellers came out victorious in a tug of war with the bulls, signaling a resumption of the sell-off from the Aug. 6 high of $12,325. Full story
TIDAL CHANGE: The artist Maël Hénaff has collaborated with a local community in the London suburbs of Jaywick to teach citizens how to earn supplemental income through cryptomining, reports The Next Web’s David Canellis. Using Raspberry Pi model 3s, open source platforms and tidal energy, Henaff is hoping to prove automation isn’t all bad, in an area facing serious deindustrialization.
