1. A long-awaited bitcoin mystery will soon be revealed. Bitcoin Core contributed Bryan Bishop will publicly release a private key that was used as part of a now discontinued alert system. Bitcoin’s creator entrusted the key to several bitcoin developers to activate an alert system, once used to flash a text warning in case something happened that could impact the security of funds. The system was retired in 2016 amid security concerns and confusion about its use. The reveal is the final step in destroying the system. 2. Developers released a new type of ethereum token specifically made for video games. Known as ERC-1155, the token has a simplified process for token swaps that recognizes the different types of qualities of digital items found in video games. The token will replace the network’s need to process and confirm each transaction for each item separately. ERC-1155 tokens are designed so that any number of items can be sent to multiple recipients in one single transaction. -CRYPTOBRIEFING

3. Merck has applied for a patent that uses blockchain to track goods as they move through the supply chain. The pharmaceutical giant submitted a patent application in December of 2016 that was published last Thursday. The application outlines a method where blockchain could be used to store information about a physical object and provide updates as it moves onward from its point of origin. For Merck, the company can use this technology to reduce the number of counterfeit medications in circulation. -COINDESK

4. Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne said blockchain might be the world’s greatest hope to end global poverty. Byrne recently launched a new venture, DeSoto, Inc., that plans to build solution to empower individuals through property ownership. He is working with world-renowned Peruvian economist Hernando de Soto Polar. “Hernando and I intend to use blockchain technology to empower and enfranchise the 5 billion people who live outside formal economies within five years,” Byrne said. -PYMNTS

5. The three implementations of the Lightning Network – c-lightning, lightning network daemon, and Éclair - officially entered beta on Monday. Developer Blockchain said the technology would not become more straightforward for end users, hopefully helping drive acceptance. “[The lightning network] migrates away from the protocol used while designing the specification and toward a new architecture that is modular and extensible, to better adapt to your needs and your infrastructure,” developers said in a blog post. -BITCOINIST

6. Jordan Belfort, better known as the “Wolf of Wall Street,” believes bitcoin’s demise is imminent. Belfort said in a recent interview that bitcoin’s price struggles in 2018 signal the beginning of the end of the top-ranked cryptocurrency.
