Inside the rise and fall (and rise?) of Bitmain
Bitmain was once one of the giants of crypto, and at one time was planning a record IPO. Those plans are now but a distant memory, as the crypto mining operation has now embarked on mass layoffs and a shelving of its public offering plans. That said, Bitcoin's upcoming halving in 2020 could end up driving additional demand for Bitmain's next-gen mining rigs, offering the company a ray of hope for the future.

This is a detailed look at the inner workings of Mike Novogratz's Galaxy Digital
Once a disgraced Wall Street veteran, Mike Novogratz has built Galaxy Digital into one of crypto's largest investment funds. Galaxy Digital is a merchant bank that primarily focuses on investing in crypto projects, and it was initially capitalized using $25M of Novogratz's own money. It's now working on raising a credit fund to make further crypto investments, and also continue to strengthen its index fund.

Crypto is about to start looking more like your bank
A new banking standard from the FATF (Financial Action Task Force) is set to introduce crypto regulations and KYC guidelines that look strikingly similar to bank regulations today. Many crypto exchanges will likely attempt to comply with the regulations, but preserving customer anonymity and remaining independent of regulators could be a tight line to walk for many.

Sand, death, and cryptocurrency - life in a decentralized Syria
One autonomous region of Syria is experimenting with blockchain and decentralized governance as a way to retain its independence in the face of the Syrian government. Local merchants are looking into solutions for accepting crypto, and the local government is embracing the political philosophy of democratic confederalism - a philosophy which happens to have a lot in common with blockchain.

Here are the key lessons learned by one trader who lost $139K in crypto
Crypto trader Bohdan Kit put all of his investments into crypto in late 2016, and watched his holdings multiply exponentially during the crypto bull run of 2017. But just two years later, nearly all of his original investment had evaporated amid some bad trading decisions and the overall market downturn. This piece is a great recap of the key lessons and attributes that are critical to success in trading crypto.

Digital money is here - but will it make us more free in the end?
Cryptocurrency promises to give individuals sovereignty over their money and identity, but as recent developments in Venezuela and China have shown, this won't necessarily be the case. As a result, the terms "blockchain" and "crypto" have been twisted beyond their original meaning - and it's worth considering how crypto companies and governments alike can ensure that this technology ushers in a future that's better for all users.

What does Cboe shutting down crypto futures trading mean for the industry?
Last week, the crypto world was shocked when Cboe announced that it would not be offering futures contracts on Bitcoin anymore. Contrary to the belief of many, this isn't necessarily a market signal - rather, it's indicative of how misplaced expectations can drive market narratives (for better or worse).

Here's how to file taxes on your cryptocurrency in a bear year
It's been a tough year for crypto investors, and tax season is the latest reminder of that. Knowing how to file one's taxes and correctly report any capital losses is critical this time of year, and this guide does a great job of explaining how to do that. There have been some subtle changes in the tax code this year that affect crypto investors, which will be important to keep in mind as tax season approaches.

Hire Me To Do Game Writing!

Dear video game publications,

I am looking for more consistent, paid game writing. I've been freelancing for the last few years, but am specifically looking for work that I can rely on monetarily. I'm available for freelance work, columns, part-time, or even full-time work.

Portfolio

I've done several reviews in different styles. The A.V. Club's Sawbuck Gamer feature focuses on smaller games with shorter reviews, like this one of Bit.Trip.Flux. I also did medium-length reviews for The A.V Club, including bad games like Pirates of Black Cove, as well as good games like Gray Matter, a review I enjoyed writing due to the interesting confluence of adventure game item manipulation and magic sleight-of-hand. There are also a few reviews at Paste Magazine, including this focus on the mechanics and interface of the Bit.Trip series with their Complete collection.

Detailed focus on mechanics is also the heart of one of my favorite features for Gamasutra, on The Gestalt Effect Of Dragon Quest IX and how its combination of different mechanics and styles makes the game incredibly strong. I've also written about the emotional affect of things that aren't mechanics, such as this piece about weather effects in Skyrim and throughout gaming history. Video game history is a passion of mine, and that can be seen in pieces like my ranking of the 60 Most Influential Games for 1up.com, or an examination of old Ultima games and their lack of antagonists for The Escapist.

One dream of mine is to do a regular series on the best-loved games throughout game history, a video game equivalent to the A.V. Club's "New Cult Canon" series. I've published two prototype pieces on my blog. First is an overall analysis of Dragon Age Origins and what makes it special, including its fantasy tone and use of party members and their relationships instead of ethics. Second, a more meditative piece on Far Cry 2 and how it is both an anti-war game and a glorification of war.

While most of this is criticism, I'm also trained as a journalist, and have done some investigative or profile pieces. I'm especially proud of my Gamasutra feature interviewing and analyzing the career trajectories of the designers of classic games, like John Romero or Jane Jensen. And, since I am located in the Bay Area, I'd be available for local events, interviews, or conferences like GDC.

Finally, while game writing is the goal I'm focused on, here, I also have a more diverse background and set of interests. I regularly review books and television for The A.V. Club, including books like David Mamet's ridiculous The Secret Knowledge or Mat Johnson's fabulous Pym. Television shows include Terra Nova or Misfits

I hope this gives a good idea of what I'm capable of. If you're interested in talking further about work, leave a comment, talk to me on twitter, or email me with my Twitterhandle/firstlast at gmail. Thanks!

We were expecting some sort of Hitman 2 game ever since IO started referring to the last game as 'The Complete First Season', which rather suggested that there was going to be a Season 2. (Though, as you'll know by now, those expectations have turned out to be not entirely accurate.)
Before a Hitman 2 release date could even be a thing, we needed a Hitman reboot that would be a return to form for the series. After the leaden and muddled Absolution, it's clear IO intends to build on the same sandbox formula they've perfected over the past few years.
After some stealthy – but decidedly non-violent – deduction work, we know loads of Hitman 2 trailer and gameplay details. We know the location of the first two missions, the ways in which the design of the initial game is being expanded, and a few of the silly/excellent costumes you'll be donning. Here's everything we know about Hitman 2.

HITMAN 2 RELEASE DATE

IO Interactive was not shy about revealing this one. The Hitman 2 release date is November 13, 2018. Hitch-free assassinations require patience, but that's barely a wait at all.

HITMAN 2 LOCATIONS

All of Hitman 2 locations have been revealed it looks like Agent 47 is going to acquire lot of air miles. The six locations are Miami, Colombia, New Zealand, India, USA, and the North Atlantic with Austria being the setting for the Sniper Assassin Game Mode. We've seen plenty of Miami and Columbia and in IO's most recent trailer we can feast our eyes on Hawke's Bay, Mumbai, Vermont and the Isle of Sgàil.

MIAMI, USA

Miami was the first Hitman 2 location that we got to feast our eyes on. We've played through Hitman's 2 Miami mission where Agent 47 attended the final hours of the Global Innovation Race a spectacle for the fastest cars in modern racing. In Miami you are tasked with killing a motorsport driver.

SANTA FORTUNA, COLOMBIA

We've also played the game's second mission, and know that Agent 47's work will take him to the thick Colombian jungle. In this level, foliage is your ally as Agent 47 will be slinking through the underbrush to make his kills. There are three targets: Rico Delgado, Jorge Franco, and Andrea Martinez. There are hippos, heavy-chandeliers, drug-filled souvenirs, a precariously rickety gold statue, and the opportunity to stab someone with a tattoo pen. Clearly creatively bumping people off will remain at the forefront of this sequel. IO also said in a press release that guards won't be the only threat this time, so prepare for wild animals and poisonous plants.

HAWKE'S BAY, NEW ZEALAND

Hawke's Bay, New Zealand looks to be an interesting location. The location trailer shows Agent 47 on a beach at night time perusing his target, sand being kicked up everywhere. With just the sand dunes and the sea for as far as you can see, its going to put your stealth skills to the test.

MUMBAI, INDIA

Mumbai is on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, its loud, crowded, and there are plenty of opportunities for a sneaky and stealthy kill.

2. The internet is buzzing with some FUD about CoinBene, which we will try to straighten out the best we can. The exchange went into "maintenance mode" on Tuesday to upgrade its wallet security. The maintenance took a long period of time and some users suspected an attack. Things got worse when Elementus, a next-gen blockchain analysis company, released a report that claimed CoinBene moved $105 million in crypto. The report attempts to prove that CoinBene moved funds to other exchanges, something the exchange denies. The exchange has since released a statement saying all user funds are 100 percent secure. –AMB CRYPTO
