Bitcoin’s golden cross — the technically bullish 50-day over 200-day crossover — is now confirmed, but the macro backdrop is doing its best to complicate the signal. Meanwhile, the week is carrying two pointed reminders that bitcoin’s rally hasn’t resolved everything: ETF year-to-date flows are still $1 billion in the red, and Metaplanet’s CEO tried to calm investors without fully answering them. August was spectacular for bitcoin ETFs — $3.52 billion in fresh capital, the best month of the year — and September has added $770 million so far. But the math from January through June still dominates: June alone wiped out $4.51 billion, erasing everything made in March and April, and year-to-date net flows remain about $1 billion in the red. The real test, according to Bitfinex analysts, is whether those inflows survive this week’s CPI print on Thursday and the next Treasury buyback operation — if investors keep buying while short-term yields stay elevated, it would signal that interest rates are no longer the binding constraint on bitcoin. Oil prices surging 10% this month toward $100 on Saudi strikes is the main new headwind.
Crypto traders turned on Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP memecoin before it even launched.
Hunter Biden announced a memecoin called LAPTOP, deploying on Coinbase’s Base network Wednesday with a billion-token supply: founders take 30% locked for six months, and 20% goes to airdrops targeting wallets that lost money on Trump’s TRUMP token. The backlash was immediate and unusually direct — prominent traders publicly told Biden not to bother, Kraken deleted a promotional post after its replies filled with criticism, and Andrew Callaghan’s Channel 5 (whose mailing list was named as an airdrop recipient) publicly distanced itself from the project. Coinbase Base head Jordan Fish also clarified that anyone can deploy on Base without approval. TRUMP launched to nearly $15 billion in market cap in January 2025 and has since fallen 97%; LAPTOP is arriving after traders have had nearly two years to watch that trade play out.
Metaplanet’s CEO broke his silence. Shareholders say the hard questions remain unanswered.
Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich acknowledged on Sunday that the company had not adequately explained its executive compensation structure and denied personal involvement in trading decisions made by MMXX Ventures, a significant Metaplanet shareholder in which he holds a non-majority stake. The controversy centers on a 2022 stock rights plan that gave executives a floating 20% of Metaplanet’s fully diluted share count — meaning every time the company issued new stock to buy bitcoin, insiders’ option entitlements automatically grew while ordinary shareholders were diluted. Metaplanet froze the pool in August at 319 million shares but did not roll it back to where it stood when the bitcoin strategy began; shareholders are demanding that rollback and public disclosure of MMXX’s ownership. Metaplanet shares are down 43% this year while Strategy is up 40% and Strive has surged 114% over the same period.
