Here's how the SEC wants it to work The SEC's new "innovation exemption" gives qualifying platforms a five-year window to operate markets for tokenized U.S. stocks without registering as national securities exchanges — a milestone that separates real ownership tokens from the synthetic trackers that have existed offshore, and opens a regulated path for actual shares to trade through smart contracts on public blockchains. The distinction matters: a qualifying token must carry the same voting rights, dividends, and trading-halt obligations as the underlying security, and issuers get a veto before any third party can tokenize their shares. The sandbox is deliberately small — the most liquid stocks are capped at 75 names and 0.25% of average daily volume per venue. The timing is no accident either: the SEC held back while Congress debated the CLARITY Act, and within a day of its failure, Chair Atkins moved on tokenization within the agency's existing authority. Together with last week's proposed rule allowing blockchain to serve as the official record of securities ownership, this amounts to the SEC beginning to test whether blockchain can become part of the actual machinery of U.S. stock markets. Read more → Business Haruko hack hits 15 crypto clients, with exchange API details, trading data and funds stolen Haruko, the London-based institutional crypto infrastructure provider serving more than 80 clients across 100+ exchanges and 30 blockchains, was hit by a targeted cyberattack this week that exposed exchange API details and trading data across 15 clients — with some smaller hedge funds losing a small amount of funds, according to three people with knowledge of the matter. The attacker exploited a vulnerability in Haruko's bare-metal server infrastructure to extract a user-access token and capture data from process memory; whitelisted clients were unaffected. Haruko said it has patched the vulnerability and refreshed server-side secrets, and plans to publish a full technical post-mortem.
