XRP slipped below $1.00 in Asian trading Tuesday morning — the first time since November 2024, when Donald Trump’s election win sent crypto surging. Bitcoin, meanwhile, recorded a rare outperformance against equities: BTC gained 1.15% while the S&P 500 fell 0.5%, its best relative session in months. The macro pressure comes from an unexpected direction: the diesel-crude “crack spread” — the gap between what refineries earn from diesel versus what they pay for crude — has hit a record $102.20 a barrel. Wars in Iran and Ukraine are disrupting supply just as harvest season peaks demand, and everything shipped by truck or boat will cost more as a result. That is an inflation story, and rising inflation expectations push bond yields higher — the same dynamic that has been capping bitcoin’s gains all summer. Against that, the dollar is breaking down, which has historically supported BTC. And the cards are also reshuffling: Visa is looking for a new stablecoin settlement partner after Mastercard bought its previous one.

The crack in the energy market is wider than ever. Bitcoin might feel it.
The “crack spread” — the difference between the price of diesel and the crude oil used to produce it, which tells you how profitable refining is right now — just hit a record high of $102.20 a barrel. That is not a routine energy-market datapoint. Wars in Iran and Ukraine are simultaneously disrupting oil supply while harvest season in the northern hemisphere is pushing diesel demand to its seasonal peak: tractors, combines and agricultural trucks all run on diesel. The Hormuz Letter, a widely followed X account covering Middle East and commodities markets, laid out the chain: agriculture runs on diesel, heating oil is next into winter, and everything moved by truck or ship will cost more. Bloomberg’s “Mish” Shedlock called it more bluntly: “Record high crack spreads. Serious economic ramifications.” Why does this matter for bitcoin? Because high diesel prices feed through into food and shipping inflation, which feeds into CPI, which pushes bond yields higher, which raises the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like bitcoin — a dynamic CoinDesk has flagged repeatedly this summer. The market has not fully priced this in yet. There is a competing force working in the other direction: the U.S. Dollar Index fell to a two-and-a-half-month low of 99.29 on Monday and broke down from its bullish trendline — a technical signal that points to further dollar weakness ahead. A weaker dollar has historically been one of bitcoin’s most reliable supports. WTI crude oil simultaneously broke above its four-month bearish trendline on Monday — the downtrend that began at April’s highs is over, and prices could rise further. Bitcoin gained 1.15% Monday while the S&P 500 fell 0.5% — a rare day of outperformance that held even as bond yields climbed to multi-decade highs globally. Leveraged long futures positions on bitcoin face real pressure below $57,000 — that is where liquidation risk concentrates — but the current range near $64,000 provides significant cushion.
Visa is looking for a new stablecoin settlement partner now that BVNK is owned by Mastercard.
Visa is running a formal search for a new stablecoin settlement and over-the-counter partner, after its previous partner, BVNK, was acquired by Mastercard for $1.8 billion earlier this year. Documents seen by CoinDesk show Visa has issued a request for product outlining its requirement to swap and support a range of stablecoins and handle settlement for the newly launched Open USD project — the stablecoin platform backed by Stripe, Visa and Mastercard that plans to support multiple stablecoins including USDC. The scope narrows the field considerably: Visa needs a partner with cryptocurrency exchange licenses in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Singapore simultaneously — a combination that eliminates most stablecoin infrastructure providers. The broader context is a stablecoin arms race at the card network level. Stripe’s $1.1 billion acquisition of Bridge in late 2024 put Visa and Mastercard on notice that their traditional payment infrastructure could be outflanked if they didn’t secure their own stablecoin rails. Mastercard responded by buying BVNK. Visa launched its Visa Stablecoin Platform last month, giving banks and fintechs tools to access and move stablecoins, with OUSD as the initial supported token. Now it needs the licensed settlement infrastructure to match. The total stablecoin market cap sits at roughly $300 billion according to CoinGecko — and the race to route that capital through proprietary rails is accelerating even as the broader crypto market remains flat. XRP slipped below $1.00 to 98 cents in early Asian trading Tuesday, its first break of that level since November 2024. Ripple simultaneously announced its third Korean bank partnership of the year, with a regional lender adopting Ripple Payments for cross-border transactions — a reminder that XRP’s fundamentals and its price can move independently.
Ethereum’s next upgrade breaks the 21,000 gas rule wallets have relied on since day one.
Since Ethereum launched, one number has been as close to a constant as anything in the network: 21,000 gas units. That is what a basic ether transfer costs, whether you are sending to someone who has used their wallet a thousand times or to a brand-new address that has never appeared in Ethereum’s records. Ethereum’s next major upgrade, called Glamsterdam, is ending that uniformity. Under the new rules, sending ETH to an existing account still costs 21,000 gas. But sending to an address that has never been used will cost an additional 183,600 units of a new category called state gas — because creating a permanent new record in Ethereum’s ledger is more work than updating an existing one, and the network is charging accordingly. The problem is how much software has been built on the assumption that 21,000 is both the minimum and maximum for any ETH transfer. Wallets use it to calculate how much gas to include in a payment; blockchain services use it to sort and categorize transactions; fee estimators use it to quote costs. Any software treating 21,000 as a ceiling will either reject valid payments or send transactions with insufficient gas attached. Ethereum Foundation developers published a blog post Monday warning wallet providers, blockchain trackers and fee calculators to update their code. Glamsterdam switches on Thursday on Platåberget, a test version of Ethereum running worthless tokens, before progressing to Sepolia and Hoodi test networks and eventually mainnet. Users sending ETH do not need to do anything this week — the warning is aimed at the companies and developers whose software those users depend on. The broader implication is that Ethereum is moving toward charging for the actual storage work a transaction creates rather than a single flat rate, a model that better reflects the real costs of maintaining state on a global ledger.
