1. Bitmain Technologies, the world’s dominant provider of cryptocurrency mining chips, has debated going public. CEO Jihan Wu said he has no specific plans to go public at this moment but is open to being listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange. That’s a big step for the five-year-old company that has been shrouded in secrecy since its founding. In a recent interview, Wu said Bitmain brought in more than $2.5 billion in revenue last year and the company has a value in excess of $12 billion. -BLOOMBERG

2. It has been 173 days since bitcoin set a new price record. This is bitcoin’s longest stretch without setting a record in about two years after routinely setting new price records last year. However, it is not the longest the coin has gone without setting a new high. The coin went 1,176 days between 2012 and 2016 between setting a new mark. With bitcoin trading just below $8,000 per coin it is far off from the $20,000 price point it hit last December. Bulls, though, believe the increased regulation of the bitcoin market will help reduce price volatility and bring more investors into the fold. –MARKET WATCH

3. Stefan Thomas, the former CTO of Ripple, has launched a smart contracts platform to compete with ethereum. Called Codius, the platform is an open-source project that Ripple released in beta in 2014 but shelved the following year. Thomas is re-launching the platform as the technical backbone for his new company, Coil. Codius aims to change the way websites monetize content. The system uses Interledger, an open-source protocol Ripple developed, that allows users’ browsers to make micropayments to websites they visit. -COINDESK

4. Chinese search giant Baidu will launch a native blockchain game, Du Yuzhou. Built on Baidu’s new proprietary platform SuperChain, the game depicts a blockchain-powered space journey where users can receive “elements” to build their own planets. The blockchain develops the tokens and rewards them to players through airdrops. As users accumulate more elements they can build larger planets, which will increase in gravity and absorb even more elements. –COIN SPEAKER

5. A group of developers are building a location technology that mirrors GPS but uses the blockchain to ensure accuracy. To do this, the team at startup FOAM needs to create a map of the entire world, which they plan to do with the help of ethereum smart contracts. While the technology can get complicated from there the basis is that by doing this the company can offer a proof of location more accurate than any of the current systems available today. -COINDESK

9. Another bitcoin prediction: Prices will remain stagnant for a few months and then increase toward the end of the year. In fact, some believe the current price could double by the end of 2018. –THE INDEPENDENT
