1. The price of bitcoin spiked nearly $400 in one hour on Wednesday. The coin surged from $6,466 to $6,858 between midnight and 1 a.m. London time, according to Coindesk. There was not an immediate reason given for the sudden jump, but one investors were surely to appreciate. -CNBC

2. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak said he plans to work with a blockchain-related startup in what would be a first for him. Wozniak, who did not name the company, said he has become intrigued by blockchain's potential, which reminds him of the early days of the Internet. "I was amazed at the technology behind [bitcoin]," Wozniak said. "I've encountered people working in real estate avenues, types of Uber systems, everything we've got in our life, especially involving transactions." –COIN TELEGRAPH

3. Coinbase's trading volume has dropped 83 percent from the beginning of the year to the end of July. The number comes from the Diar newsletter, a resource that monitors trading volume. Bitstamp handled 73 percent less volume in July than in January, while Binance shockingly remained steady. Binance has focused more on altcoins, and has not been as dependent on the price of bitcoin to drive trading as other exchanges. -BITCOINIST

4. The federal government has awarded more than $800,000 for a blockchain research project. The National Science Foundation has funded the San Diego Supercomputing Center's Open Science Chain project, a proposed distributed ledger which will help researchers verify data collected through scientific experiments. The goal is to provide researchers with more transparency into the data they are examining. -COINDESK

5. There are currently four unredeemed coins worth 1,000 BTC. Casascius Coins created physical bitcoins in various denominations between 2011 and 2013. Six coins were created that could be redeemed for 1,000 BTC, but to date only two have used. 6. The Chinese government has blocked several blockchain-related news accounts on WeChat, one of the country's top social apps. The Chinese government imposed a ban on ICOs last year, along with the WeChat accounts of some of the biggest cryptocurrency platforms in the country. A number of these accounts remained active, though, until this latest crackdown. These companies had used WeChat's large user base to reach out to their own niche audience segment. –NEWS BTC
