Texas has banned state employees from using TikTok due to security concerns, according to Gov. Gregg Abbott. Texas becomes the fifth U.S. state to implement such a ban. More: - Abbott stated that TikTok collects data such as when, where, and how TikTok users conduct internet activity, offering this data later on to the Chinese government.
- The governor quotes a previous statement from company officials, which says that China-based employees have access to U.S. user data even though Bytedance, the parent company behind TikTok, has a base in the U.S.
- State authorities have until Jan. 15, 2023, to develop a model plan that would regulate the use of TikTok on personal devices by state employees.
- Texas joins Maryland, South Dakota, South Carolina, and Nebraska in banning the app for employees.
Zoom Out: - Former president Donald Trump had stated that he was considering banning the app altogether. Later on, it was reported that Microsoft might acquire the U.S. operations of TikTok, but the idea never came to fruition.

A scammer group may have made $500M from investment scams in the last four years, according to a report. Researchers are tracking the group as CryptosLabs. More: - The group leaves messages on investment forums and runs advertising on social media in order to attract attention.
- CryptosLabs usually fakes its identity, having used so far at least 40 popular European brand names to mislead users into believing they were being presented with legitimate facts.
- Once the users clicked on the links they were sent, they would be told to fill out their information. In the next step, the victims would be contacted by phone by a call-center scammer pretending to be a personal manager from the investment division.
- They were asked to pay $210–315 as a deposit to start investing in different assets.
- Victims were lied to by being shown fake growth curves and stats to keep them investing.
- The group targeted only French-speaking victims in countries such as France, Luxembourg, and Belgium.
- Due to the popularity of these campaigns, researchers estimate the group may have made over $500M in just four years.

- The second feature presented is security keys, a hardware-driven confirmation method that aims to make 2FA identity authentication safer. The company claims this feature is likely to be used more often by celebrities and people in public life.
- Apple's third feature is named Advanced Data Protection. This feature is meant to help keep most iCloud data safe even if someone manages to successfully breach a cloud service.
