Coinbase is likely preparing to add coins which are currently in regulatory grey zones (aka, coins that could potentially be classified as securities), or outright just list coins that are clearly securities according to the US SEC. How is this possible now, and why couldn't they do this before? Well because getting all of the necessary licenses is like, really hard...so this is being made possible through good ol' Coinbase acquisitions. Namely, by their acquisition of a: broker-dealer license (B-D) a alternative trading system license (ATS) a registered investment advisor (RIA) license So now, all they need now is federal approval.
