1. Hackers have stolen more than $500,000 worth of ethereum classic. The attackers executed a 51-percent compute-intensive hack that rewrote the coin's blockchain, allowing them to "double spend" about 88,500 tokens. Coinbase, which trades the coins, paused movements of the tokens to prevent any double spends from users. Kraken Exchange halted deposits and windrawals with plans to bring the coin back online when officials believe it is safe to do so. –ARS TECHNICA

2. The Ethereum Foundation has awarded Parity Technologies a $5 million grant. Parity, perhaps best known for accidentally freezing $280 million in ethereum in 2017, will use the funds to further work on the Casper protocol, sharding, light clients and developer tools. The funding will be delivered in "several tranches," the first of which supports development that Parity has already completed. The other funds will be sent upon the completion of other work. –COIN TELEGRAPH

3. China Mobile, a Chinese telecommunications company, will use blockchain to offer customers that use a water purifier rewards. The company has developed a water purifier with a built-in computing chip and an IoT module. It will collect data on user behavior, which can be used by manufacturers and suppliers. China Mobile will give users a return on this data, offering them blockchain tokens that can be exchanged for replacement filters or to purchase other goods. –COINDESK

4. Canaan, one of the world's largest makers of bitcoin mining hardware, has considered holding an IPO in the United States. Based in China, Canaan had looked into holding an IPO in Hong Kong, but now has its sights set on New York. The company has said it wants to raise about $1 billion. Deliberations are still at an early stage, and there is no certainty the company will go public, but it is becoming more and more of a possibility. –BLOOMBERG
