Canadian Markets The Bank of Canada said it will continue to take aggressive interest rate decisions and that future moves will depend on new economic data. - Deputy Governor Sharon Kozicki said that if the economy is doing well, the bank will fight inflation more forcefully.
- The Bank of Nova Scotia blames rising inflation on excess demand created by pandemic-era support programs.
- The Bank of Canada raised rates again on Wednesday, for the seventh time this year.

European Markets European markets were down overall on Thursday but some sectors saw gains. - The Stoxx 600 fell by 0.2% on the day, with almost all sectors finishing in the red with slight losses.
- Retail stocks dragged down markets, losing 1.2%, while mining stocks led gains with a 1.2% increase.
- Aroundtown, a Luxembourg-based real estate firm, rose 9% and was the best-performing company in the Stoxx 600.

Asian Markets Markets in Asia were mixed on Thursday, again influenced by local news. - The Hang Seng saw strong gains after it was announced that some Covid restrictions in Hong Kong would be lifted, including outdoor mask requirements and testing for those arriving in the city.
- However, stocks in mainland China ended in the red. The Shenzhen Component lost 0.3% and the Shanghai Composite fell by 0.1%.
- Analysts forecast that the real estate market in Australia will fall by between 7% and 10% next year, while in Japan it will climb by between 2% and 4%.

Commodities Oil prices were down on Thursday even though Canada's TC Energy shut down the Keystone pipeline. - The pipeline, which typically carries around 620,000 barrels a day from Alberta to the U.S. Midwest and Gulf Coast, was shut down following a spill in Kansas.
- Prices rose after the stoppage was announced but fell later in the day amid fears that demand for oil will fall due to an expected economic slowdown and higher interest rates.
- Brent crude lost 0.7% and U.S. West Texas Intermediate fell by 0.2%.
- These are new lows for 2022, and the 14-day strength index for Brent is below its expected level, showing that the asset is currently oversold and will likely rebound soon.

Currency Exchange Rates The U.S. Dollar was down on Thursday amid uncertainty surrounding future interest rate hikes. - The Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, and the Bank of England will announce their interest rate decisions next week.
- The U.S. Dollar has lost 6.2% this quarter, the biggest quarterly drop since the 8.5% recorded in Q3 2010.
- Investors are currently pricing in a 91% chance of a 50-basis point interest rate hike and a 9% chance of a 75-basis point increase.
