IS THE FREEDOM TO TRANSACT A UNIVERSAL HUMAN RIGHT?

A planetary-scale network for permissionless value transfer, with no bank and no governments involved. Ten years ago, the bitcoin white-paper set out this vision—today, it’s a reality.

But with unique freedoms come unique limitations.

What is the price of creating a global, decentralized, digital money? Should the ability to pay, fund-raise, and otherwise engage in economic activity on a blockchain be enshrined as a human right? When is the common good more important than individual liberty?

That’s what we’re debating—and we’ll give Crypto Twitter a run for its money.

The Consensus Debate will take place over an hour, with opening and closing statements, and an opportunity for rebuttals, from both sides. The audience will be invited to participate with questions.

Some of the points that will be addressed include:
  • To what extent are concepts like censorship resistance and absolute financial privacy desirable in a free and open society?
  • How should concerns for public safety supercede the individual’s right to engage in transactions privately?
  • Is it even possible to have an open financial system if access is conditional?
  • Who’s in charge of blocking individuals or groups from transacting on a public chain?
