US Markets Stock futures are flat overnight after the market was up on Tuesday with tech stocks leading the gains.  Investors remain uncertain about whether the Fed will continue to aggressively raise rates. The general consensus is that the Fed will hold off on major interest rates in the short term as inflation has been falling. Analysts expect a 25-basis point interest rate hike next month.  The four major indexes are up so far this year. The Russell 2000 is leading the pack with a 3.49% gain.  The current 10 Year U.S. Treasury yield is set at 3.62070% Dow Jones  33,704.10 0.56% S&P 500  3,919.25 0.70% Nasdaq  10,742.63 1.01% Russell 2000 1,822.65 1.49% *Stock Market data as of the last closing bell. Canadian Markets TD Economics forecasts that this year Canada will have the lowest home sales since 2001.  According to TD's housing market outlook, home sales will fall because affordability levels are at their lowest point in over 30 years.  The average home price declined by 12% in the 12 months to November.  TD predicts that the market will continue to fall as much as 20% below its peak and will bottom in early 2023.  TSX  19,898.86 0.21% *Canadian stock prices are as of the last close. European Markets European markets were down on Tuesday as they reacted to a speech by Fed Chairman Jerome Powell at Riksbank, Sweden's central bank.  Powell noted that central banks need to make unpopular decisions, such as rising interest rates, to stabilize prices. Two other Fed policymakers this week indicated that a 50-basis point interest rate hike is still possible next month. The Stoxx 600 lost 0.56% on the day, with the automotive industry leading losses. Asian Markets Stocks in Asia were mixed on Thursday despite the positive momentum heading into the trading day.  Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel said that both Pfizer and Moderna are in talks with Beijing officials to sell their COVID-19 vaccines in China.  Data from South Korea showed a trade deficit in November, whereas the country posted trade surpluses since August.  Investors forecast that Chinese tech companies will perform well in 2023 as the country reopens, and many have moved past regulatory issues that plagued them over the past two years.  S&P Asia 50 4,855.42 3.40% Japan (Nikkei 225) 26,175.56 0.78% South Korea (KOSPI) 2,351.31 0.05% China (Hang Seng) 21,331.46 -0.27% India (SENSEX) 60,115.48 -1.04% *Asian stock prices are as of 7 am ET. Currency Exchange Rates The U.S. Dollar rose slightly on Tuesday after hitting a seven-month low a day earlier.  The Euro was down slightly even though Goldman Sachs said it no longer forecasts that Europe will enter a recession this year.  CPI figures due later this week will likely impact the dollar and influence the next Fed decision in February.  Investors expect that the Fed will not raise the reference rate above 5%.  UK(GBP) £0.82 -0.32% Europe (EURO) €0.93 -0.77% Canada (Canadian Dollar) $1.34 -0.08% Japan (Yen) ¥132.14 0.21% *Exchange rates as of 7 am ET.
