European stocks stay positive

US Markets U.S. stock futures are down overnight following a negative start to the week. The Dow lost 1.14% on Tuesday and the S&P 500 dipped 0.20%. The Nasdaq ended in the green with a 0.14% rise. Goldman Sachs lost 6% during trading hours after its Q4 earnings report missed expectations.  Moderna shares were up more than 6% overnight after the company announced it has developed a vaccine that can prevent the respiratory syncytial virus in older adults. The current 10 Year U.S. Treasury yield is set at 3.54650%. Canadian Markets The Federal Government has given Alberta $10M to support the growing hydrogen industry in the province.  The funds are expected to help support 1,600 jobs in Alberta, including training and product testing.  The decision comes as conservative politicians criticize the federal government for wanting to phase out oil jobs without creating alternative employment. The federal government says the funds will help the country transition away from oil and gas. Most of the money is earmarked for Edmonton, the province's hydrogen hub with more than two dozen hydrogen and hydrogen-related projects under development. European Markets The Stoxx 600 rose again on Tuesday as the World Economic Forum continues in Davos. The Stoxx 600 was up 0.3%, led by a 1% increase in mining stocks.  The index has been up for five consecutive trading sessions and has gained more than 6% in 2023.  K+S, a German chemicals company, was the best-performing stock after gaining 7% on the day. Commodities Oil prices were up on Tuesday following a volatile trading day for commodities.  Brent crude finished the day up 1.7% while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude rose 0.4%.  Official data released on Tuesday shows that China's oil refinery output declined in 2022 for the first time since 2001.  The weakening U.S. Dollar is also a positive for oil markets, making oil more affordable for international buyers.  Oil (NYSEARCA:OIL) 30.72 0.85% Gold (NYSEARCA:GLD) 177.59 -0.64% Silver (NYSEARCA:SLV) 22.01 -1.43% Corn (NYSEARCA:CORN) 26.97 1.28% Lumber (NASDAQ:WOOD) 75.96 -0.31% *Commodity prices are as of 7 am ET. Currency Exchange Rates The U.S. Dollar continued to decline to add to its losses in 2023.  In the last ten trading days, the Japanese Yen is up almost 5% against the USD.  The U.S. Dollar Index is down 3% this year and economists expect it will continue to decline in the coming months as the Fed slows the pace of its interest rate hikes.  The New Zealand and Australian Dollars were both up, showing that the risk appetite in currency markets is increasing.  UK(GBP) £0.81 -0.41% Europe (EURO) €0.93 0.34% Canada (Canadian Dollar) $1.34 -0.03% Japan (Yen) ¥128.95 0.71% *Exchange rates as of 7 am ET. Cryptocurrency According to a Coindesk report, more than 33% of all U.S. Senators and House Representatives have received campaign donations or support from Sam Bankman-Fried or other senior executives at bankrupt crypto exchange FTX.  FTX executives have donated funds to 196 members of Congress, including high-level members of both parties, such as Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).  Representative Lou Correa (D-CA) received the maximum individual contribution of $2,900 directly from Sam Bankman-Fried but claimed to have never spoken with or met him.  Some lawmakers have already donated the exact amounts they received to charities in an attempt to distance themselves from Bankman-Fried.
