Telegram is closing the doors on its TON blockchain project. Pavel Durov, founder and CEO of Telegram, said that its involvement with its Telegram Open Network (TON) "is over." Over the last 2.5 years, Durov stated that engineers had been working on the blockchain platform and its Gram token. When integrated with Telegram, TON was designed to change how people store and transfer funds and information. However, according to the Telegram founder, its battle with U.S. regulators was to blame for its decision to end the project. More: - The SEC sues Telegram to prevent the company from issuing its Gram token to U.S. investors, sold in a $1.7 billion sale, which Telegram had failed to register.
- The TON network was expected to launch last November.
- Telegram lost a round to the SEC in its coin offering fight in March, after the regulator convinced a New York federal judge that the Gram token was a securities offering.
