Chris Larsen, Ripple co-founder, has said that the U.S. has been "slow to the [blockchain] game." TBT: The exploitation of the DAO Back in June 2016, a hacker was able to steal $50 million out of $160 million raised in Ether from a project known as the Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO). At the time of the hack, Nathaniel Popper, a reporter for the NYT who covered the event, said that this would most likely put an end to the project. Emin Gün Sirer, a computer science professor at Cornell, said: "This is one of the nightmare scenarios everyone was worried about." Funded by investors worldwide, the DAO was aimed at being a standard-bearer for cryptocurrency ventures. Prior to the hack, scientists had pointed out several vulnerabilities in the DAO's underlying code. The event subsequently sparked a debate as to whether Ethereum should undergo a hard fork to recover the stolen funds, which resulted in the network splitting in two. Ethereum continued on the forked blockchain and Ethereum Classic continued on the original blockchain. | |
