A Chrome extension with more than 1 million downloads that takes control of victims' browsers has been tracked by researchers. The malware is being tracked as Dormant Colors. More: - The malware uses a background color-changing extension as a decoy.
- Victims are first targeted with false ads that redirect to a website. The landing page suggests that the user download an extension to continue visiting the website.
- Once the users download the extension, in this case, a background color-changer, the page keeps redirecting the victim to ads with affiliate links. The threat actor likely has a percentage for each sale completed through the links.
