1 | Twitter appears to have restored the functionality for logged-out users to view individual tweets, according to TechCrunch and Engadget. Last Friday, the platform began barring non-logged-in users from seeing public tweets and profiles on the platform. More: - According to Twitter owner Elon Musk, restricting access was a "temporary emergency measure" to counteract data pillaging, which was "degrading service for normal users."
- As of Wednesday, Twitter is now letting users view tweets without logging in, though tweet feeds for profiles are still blocked for non-logged-in users.
- Tweet previews in iMessage are also reportedly functioning for some users.
Related: - In addition to tweet visibility restrictions, Twitter is limiting daily tweet access, citing a need to combat harmful bots that scrape the platform for data.
- The limits are currently 1,000 posts per day for unverified users and 10,000 posts per day for verified users.
- Twitter claims the change only impacts a small percentage of users.

2 | The news: Instagram's new Threads app, which aims to compete with Twitter, briefly went live on the web today, giving users a sneak peek before its official launch in the U.S. and U.K. on Thursday. Details: The interface was basic, allowing users to like, comment, repost, and share content, and directing them to download the mobile apps for iOS and Android. Threads, which combines elements of Instagram and Twitter, will also allow users to sign in using their Instagram credentials. It also will automatically transfer a user's followers, handle, bio, and verification to the new app, drawing from Instagram's sprawling base of more than 2 billion users. What brands should care: Instagram's new app could also potentially siphon away ad spending from Twitter, which already experienced a 40% drop in YoY global ad revenue at the start of the second quarter. Meta has also said that Threads may be compatible with Mastodon, hosted on the decentralized network ActivityPub, potentially drawing more users to that social media service and away from Twitter. | | |

3 | Seven major tech companies — Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta, Microsoft, and Samsung — have told the European Union that they meet the criteria to be considered "gatekeepers" under its new digital law. The EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA) imposes tougher obligations and restrictions on these designated "gatekeepers," such as bans on self-preferencing and limitations on data usage. More: - According to the DMA, companies with more than 45 million monthly active users or a market capitalization of more €75B ($82B) are classified as "gatekeepers."
- This means they have to ensure that their messaging apps can work alongside competitors' apps, granting users the freedom to choose which apps to pre-install on their devices.
- Gatekeepers are also barred from showing preference to their own services over competitors' or preventing users from uninstalling pre-installed software or app.
- Violations of the DMA can result in fines of up to 10% of a company's annual global turnover, or as high as 20% for repeat offenses.
- Once confirmed by Sept. 6, the companies will have six months to adhere to the rules.

4 | According to court documents in the FTC vs Microsoft trial, Microsoft believes that Sony will release a PlayStation 5 Slim later this year priced at $399.99. Microsoft also expects Sony to launch a handheld version of the PS5 later this year for less than $300. More: - In the documents, Microsoft argues that the Nintendo Switch is also part of the console market, countering the FTC's position that it is a two-way race between Xbox and PlayStation.
- The filings indicate that Sony may release a smaller slimmer model of the PS5, as it did with the PS4 in 2016.
- Microsoft released the Xbox One S, its more compact console, in 2016, three years after the Xbox One came out.
Zoom out: - Meanwhile, Sony previously confirmed the future release of a Playstation handheld device, codenamed Project Q, though it didn't provide a launch date.
- The handheld will stream PS5 games using WiFi and the company's Remote Play protocol.
