1 | Apple released an emergency software update for iPhones and iPads to fix a zero-day vulnerability that could allow hackers to take over the devices' functions. Apple released iOS 16.6.1 in response to the vulnerability discovered by the spyware research group Citizen Lab. More: - Citizen Lab discovered the previously unknown vulnerability when it found Pegasus spyware on the Apple device of an undisclosed employee working at a Washington, D.C.-based civil society organization.
- Pegasus has allowed users to send iMessage attachments with hidden code to victims, enabling the spyware to take over the device's functions "without any interaction from the victim."
- Citizen Lab advises all Apple users to update their devices and recommends Apple's "Lockdown Mode" for those at higher cyberattack risk.
Zoom out: - Developed by Israel's NSO Group, Pegasus spyware has been employed by foreign governments to spy on activists, dissidents, and journalists.
- In 2021, the U.S. government blacklisted NSO over the spyware and alleged surveillance.
- Thursday's update also fixes an issue with Apple Wallet, where users store card information.

3 | OpenAI's ChatGPT saw its website traffic decline for the third straight month in August, although there are signs of stabilization, according to Similarweb data. What the numbers show: Global website visits to the chatbot site fell by 3.2% to 1.43 billion in August, with declining average time spent on the site. However, unique visitors in August increased slightly. In the U.S., August saw a slight increase in website visits. What it means: The return of schools in September, especially in the U.S., is likely reviving ChatGPT's traffic as younger users seeking homework help are returning to the platform. During the summer, student use declined, especially among college-aged users. OpenAI also launched the ChatGPT iOS app in May, potentially diverting some website traffic. The bigger picture: Despite traffic fluctuations, ChatGPT is now one of the top 30 websites globally. Q: Do you believe there is still room for ChatGPT's popularity to grow, or do you think it has already reached its peak? Join the conversation here. | | |

5 | Apple has endorsed a California bill requiring large companies to report their greenhouse gas emissions annually. Senate Bill 253, co-introduced by State Senator Scott Wiener, would compel California-based companies with annual revenue exceeding $1B to disclose independently verified emission data. More: - The bill would require businesses to publicly report their Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions starting in 2026, followed by Scope 3 emissions in 2027.
- Scope 1 emissions come from a company's own sources, while Scope 2 emissions come indirectly from buying electricity and other services.
- Scope 3 emissions, the most difficult to track, arise from a company's supply or value chain.
Zoom out: - Apple supports the inclusion of "Scope 3" emissions in the corporate climate disclosures, according to a letter sent to Wiener from Mike Foulkes, Apple's director of state and local government affairs.
- "While these emissions can be challenging to measure, they are essential to understanding the full range of a company's climate impacts," Foulkes wrote
