1. Bitcoin has fallen below $6,000 per coin as it closes in on a 60 percent loss in value this calendar year. This is bitcoin’s lowest price point since last November when it was in the midst of its historic climb. Analysts cannot point to a single event that has fueled bitcoin’s most recent drop, although Matthew Newton, an analyst at eToro, believes bitcoin currently lack’s a real spark. "It needs something to get markets back to life, like some development on the technology or regulatory side," he said. -CNBC

2. Line, the Japanese messaging app that is popular in the bitcoin community, plans to launch its own exchange. The exchange, dubbed BitBox, will launch next month. It will handle “30 or more” cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin, ethereum, bitcoin cash and litecoin. Line has an estimated 200 million monthly active users worldwide for its messaging services. -FORTUNE

3. A bitcoin whale moved $290 million for just $0.04 in transaction fees. The unidentified investor transferred 48,000 bitcoins last night. With the number of bitcoin transactions dropping in recent months so has the cost of transaction fees. As one Twitter user mentioned, it would cost much more to move that sum of money in the traditional banking system. –NEWS BTC

4. Cryptojacking has gone beyond computers and mobile devices. Hackers are beginning to put malicious, mining software on anything with a process. That includes smart televisions and even refrigerators. The number of crypto-jacking cases soared from 146,704 worldwide in September to 22.4 million in December, according to anti-virus developer Avast. 5. Alibaba filed for a new patent that could help use blockchain to speed up international payments. The patent was filed with the China State Intellectual Property Office. Under Alibaba’s system, third-party payment services and their banking partners would function as nodes to create a new blockchain. Each node will maintain a ledger of user balances. When a transaction request is initiated, the nodes would verify the user's account balance, taking into account any legal compliance procedures that must be followed – a process enforced by triggering smart contracts encoded to the blockchain. -COINDESK

6. A developer has created a version of roulette over the Bitcoin Lightning Network. Web developer Rui Gomes created Lightning Spin that lets users wager between 1,000 Satoshi to 100,000 Satoshi (a range of $0.06 to $6) per round. Here’s a video showing how it works. –THE NEXT WEB
