1. A bitcoin whale lost an "enormous" bet on bitcoin last week and now other users of the exchange must foot the bill. The trader took a long position in bitcoin futures listed on OKEx. The position had a value of about $416 million, but when the price of bitcoin fell the trader was unable to cover their losses. As a result, OKEx has had to institute its "clawback policy" will force futures traders with unrealized gains this week to give up about 18 percent of their profits. OKEx said other trades would have to make up about $15 million in losses that its insurance would not cover. -BLOOMBERG

4. RandomCrypto released a new tool that calculates the true profitability of bitcoin mining. CEO Josh Metnick said the calculator aims to tell whether mining equipment is worth buying or using. Using new measurements at today's prices, the calculator shows that all of the most popular mining hardware is currently unprofitable. That includes Bitmain's S9 and GMO's 7nm B2. "Our goal is not to show mining as profitable or unprofitable – our goal is to bring more truth, accuracy, and transparency to [proof-of-work] mining," he said. -COINDESK

"We expect further declines in the future given our view that these cryptocurrencies do not fulfill any of the three traditional roles of a currency," Sharmin Mossavar-Rahmani, Goldman's chief investment officer of the private wealth management group, said. NYSE GOES CRYPTO: Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the Atlanta-based firm that owns the New York Stock Exchange, plans to launch a digital assets platform including, to start, a bitcoin futures product.

Called Bakkt, the platform will offer a one-day "physical" bitcoin futures contract – meaning bitcoin is actually delivered on a specified date, unlike the Chicago exchanges' bitcoin-linked contracts, which are settled in cash.

The product is expected to launch in November, pending U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) approval, ICE said. Full story

DOLLAR DOMINANCE: CoinDesk's analysis shows that the U.S. dollar, not the Japanese yen, is the dominant currency traded for bitcoin by a wide margin.

Previous estimates showed otherwise because they lumped together spot trades and derivative products denominated in yen, but excluded derivatives in the case of the dollar, leading to apples-and-oranges comparisons.

Correcting for these errors, CoinDesk found the dollar makes up 56 percent of spot market-only trading and 68 percent of total trading (spot and derivatives) of fiat for bitcoin. Full Story

PLEASED TO MEET YOU: A project announced Thursday, Handshake is seeking to reform the internet certificate authority (CA) system and domain registrars. It will allow entities to claim domains after proving cryptographically they own a corresponding website, in a decentralized system.

Handshake aims to give $100 million worth of its tokens to the developers and organizations it partnered up with and those that share the project's spirit, among them GitHub, the P2P Foundation, Freenode, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Tor Foundation and other like-minded non-profits.

Spearheaded by the creator of bitcoin's lightning network, Joseph Poon, Handshake has raised $10.2 million. Investors include A16z Crypto, Founders Fund, Polychain Capital and Draper Associates.

Underscoring their dedication to the idea of decentralization, Handshake's creators vow to dismantle their own entity quickly after launch.  Full Story

The key performance indicators (KPIs) for bitcoin cash (BCH) have maintained an average of about ten to twenty percent to those of bitcoin (BTC):
  • Exchange volume jumped to >100 percent of BTC's early on, before settling to lower levels
  • On-chain transaction volume remained low but on-chain transaction counts have been consistently increasing this past month to 50 percent levels
  • Average fees have stayed low at 2 percent to 5 percent that of BTC. In other terms, a few pennies vs. a dollar

Don't miss Yahoo Finance's interview with Louis Freeh, a former FBI director whose law firm, Freeh, Sporkin & Sullivan (FSS) released a widely panned report on Tether's dollar backing earlier this summer.

Freeh discusses that report, which was a snapshot of Tether's bank accounts on a single day. He again stressed that it was not an audit, and addressed some other concerns related to the document.

Asked if the relationship between Tether and one of the firm's partners, Judge Eugene Sullivan, represents a conflict of interest, Freeh said that the judge "was not on site to conduct any of the interviews with the banking partners."

He also said that the law firm had enough qualified staff to investigate crypto, and was planning to hire some more.

THE REST

BLOOMBERG: Citing anonymous sources, the news wire reports that the SEC has approached a number of brokerages that deal with cryptocurrencies with questions about their business practices, fees generated from trading, financing and initial coin offerings.

The agency also asked about investment advisers' involvement, the sources said.

FOREIGN POLICY: Anja Manuel and Leo Carter of RiceHadleyGates LLC discuss why the U.S. must explore the broad use of blockchain as soon as possible.

The tech "could be enormously useful" in the national security space, but can be dangerous if mishandled, they write. Management of the supply chains for defense systems, governments employees' background checks, sensitive data storage, quick recognitions of hacks — blockchain would make these all much more efficient, the authors argue.

MOTHERBOARD: Instead of hunting or begging for cheap power, this crypto mining operation decided to produce some itself.

Canadian company DMG Blockchain is building a hydro power substation in Southern British Columbia. The firm hopes to plug it into the local grid and use it to supply electricity to its expanded mining operations.

RESEARCH

Hyperbitcoinization: New Report Finds Bitcoin Must Hit $213,000 to Replace U.S. Monetary Supply

HYPERBITCOINIZATION

  • Hyperbitcoinization is a cryptocurrency term used to describe the event in which Bitcoin reaches mass adoption
  • In this scenario, economists have theorized that price would exponentially increase due to the limited supply of Bitcoin

Obiwankenobit, a pseudo-anonymous author, described the hyperbitcoinization "tipping point":

"The cost of rejecting bitcoin will exceed the cost of adopting it. Bitcoin will begin to assume money’s traditional roles and gain institutional and government support. It will become all money and form the backbone of a new global economy."

$213,000 IS THE LUCKY NUMBER

  • Many bulls in the cryptocurrency space have thrown out massive predictions for Bitcoin assuming it reaches mass adoption such as Tim Draper's $250,000 per Bitcoin by 2022 and John McAfee's $1 million per Bitcoin by 2020
  • Now, according to research completed by the Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) and released by Bloomberg, researchers concluded Bitcoin must hit $213,000 if it were to replace the entire U.S. monetary supply

UBS CONCLUSIONS

  • UBS did note that the price could be lower if Bitcoin "drastically" improved its "network processing capabilities"
  • UBS cited that Bitcoin can only handle a fraction of the amount of transaction volume Visa can and this causes the digital currency to have limited applications

To finish, UBS closed stating that Bitcoin does not have the attractive attributes currently that traditional currencies have if it were to replace the U.S. dollar:

"Our findings suggest that Bitcoin, in its current form, is too unstable and limited to become a viable means of payment for global transactions or a mainstream asset class."

Mt. Gox Releases Basic Policy for Rehabilitation Plan, Looks to Pay Creditors in Bitcoin

The 2014 Mt. Gox hack has been a legal battle between shareholders, creditors, and the exchange for years now. To read about the largest Bitcoin hack to date, click here.

NEW PAYMENT PLAN

  • According to the new policy released yesterday, Mt. Gox holds about 166,000 Bitcoin, 168,000 Bitcoin Cash, and other various altcoins that could have a value of over $1.3 billion at the time of writing
  • Most significantly, the policy proposes that creditors of Mt. Gox will now be getting paid back in Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash instead of cash
  • This means the mass amounts of Bitcoin won't be on sold on the open market like they were earlier this year when Mt. Gox wallet movement caused mass hysteria among investors and sent Bitcoin's price tumbling

OTHER PLAN DETAILS

In addition to the payment plan, the policy outlined more details regarding the rehabilitation plan. Here are some other plan details in a nutshell:

  • Only creditors will be distributed Mt. Gox assets, not shareholders
  • First payments to creditors are expected to start in May or June 2019
  • Mt. Gox must introduce systems to allow creditors to view their trading records
  • If new assets are discovered, an additional investigation and payment plan will take place
  • No sponsor will be selected unless it is advantageous to creditors

First Crypto Index Fund in Australia Launches

COINJAR

  • Australian cryptocurrency exchange CoinJar announced Thursday that it is launching an index fund
  • The index fund is called the CoinJar Digital Currency Fund and will have to different classes of indexes
  • The first class is the Bitcoin Class, which solely gives investors exposure to Bitcoin
  • Second is the Mixed Class which will be a market cap weighted index of BTC, ETH, XRP, and LTC

Jordan Michaelides, head of institutional at CoinJar, spoke on the new fund saying:

“Investing in cryptocurrency carries certain risks and can be an unnecessarily complex process. Traditionally, an individual investor in cryptocurrency has also been exposed to potential loss through cybercrime. We are launching the CoinJar Digital Currency Fund to handle the custody risks, simplify the investment process and provide industry best practice in security for wholesale investors.”

INSTITUTIONS ONLY

  • This product is for institutions only, you must be the Australian equivalent to an accredited investor to be able to invest in the fund
  • The minimum contribution is $50,000 initially and $10,000 after that
  • Funds like these are sometimes the only way for institutions to get into the game, because the exchange will handle custody of the coins, often because of regulatory reasons institutions can’t handle the coins
