Trading Week: Because You're Not In It For The Tech

How crypto traders find alpha and stay sane doing it. Presented by CME Group.

There's a tendency in some quarters to dismiss the trading side of crypto. Some prefer to see digital assets for their transformative potential, whether that's remaking finance or making the world a better place. Critics criticize traders for treating crypto as another commodity: bitcoin as pork futures or platinum.    But this is a big mistake, because in many ways trading is crypto. It's what gets people excited and wanting to go down the rabbit hole. It's what drives the market when the mainstream loses interest. It's what sustains the industry when highfalutin uses of blockchain technology don't quite work out.    Noelle Acheson, the former head of research at CoinDesk and sister company Genesis Trading, neatly sums up the importance of trading in an essay today for Trading Week.    "Traders have a bad rep, especially when they win and flaunt their winnings. And when they lose they tend to get scant pity," she writes.    "But here's the thing: Without traders we wouldn't have liquid markets, and without liquid markets we would not have institutional interest. And without institutional interest, our industry would still be insignificant, poorly funded, less innovative and more vulnerable to regulatory interference."   Precisely.    This week, CoinDesk delves deep into all sides of crypto trading, from practical strategies to how traders stay sane amid market turmoil and torrents of incoming information.
