The Hidden Forces Driving Asian Crypto Markets

While the world increasingly acknowledges the central role Asia plays in the crypto markets, much of the media’s attention is spent on singular figureheads like Binance’s CZ or Bitmain’s Jihan Wu.

The reality is that, for all that attention, Asia’s influence in the global cryptomarkets is often as much, a product of behind the scenes power brokers. At Invest:Asia, our goal is to take you beyond the headlines to see what’s really happening behind the curtain.

Take, for example, our speaker Yuesheng Ge. A founding member and senior investment director at Bitmain, Ge is now heading up the massively buzzed about Matrixport. Matrixport is meant to be a one-stop shop for OTC trading, lending and custody. The company was spun out of Bitmain in January and is backed by Bitmain co-founder Wu and other VCs. Invest: Asia will be Ge’s first onstage appearance representing Matrixport. He’ll give a solo talk sharing exclusive data on the firm’s already huge OTC business—and expect a few announcements as well.

Another speaker who has played a quiet but pivotal role in the markets is the Singapore-based currency trader Hoe Lon Leng. In January 2019, Leng got together nearly two dozen traders and financial professionals in what would become the first Crypto OTC Roundtable Asia (CORA)—chronicled by Alastair Marsh at Bloomberg News. The goal of the gathering was to help set a common framework around crypto derivatives - specifically OTC contracts - that would help make it easier for traditional financial institutions to get involved in the crypto markets. The first CORA included representatives from Galaxy Digital, Circle, Binance, Coinbase and more. Leng’s speech for Invest: Asia will provide a deep-dive into the innovations that Asia’s OTC desks are introducing to the market, including new forms of lending that are impacting the broader economy.

When it comes to understanding the Asian crypto markets and how they’re affecting the world, it’s important to look just a little closer at who is driving the action and how.

Join us in Singapore in September to hear more from Yuesheng Ge, Hoe Lon Leng, and many other hidden forces.

Recapping the CoinDesk Korea - Invest: Asia meetup

Last Thursday, Coindesk Korea hosted an Invest: Asia meetup. The discussion was interesting and wide ranging, with a significant amount of focus on Libra’s impact in Korea (and Asia more broadly) as well as potential competition from Kakao’s Klaytn.

Check out the livestream in Korean or the English live tweeting from our managing editor at CoinDesk Korea.
