Bitcoin Core V. 0.21.1 has been released with activation parameters for the Schnorr and Taproot protocol upgrade. If approved, the update will provide single-signature scripts, multisig scripts, and increased fungibility of bitcoin. More: Bitcoin Core was Satoshi Nakmoto’s original BTC software client back in 2009. V. 0.21.1 represents the first minor release of the 21st iteration of the blockchain.  Taproot’s Merkelized Abstract Syntax Tree (MAST) will provide improvements to privacy and the weight of transactions. The Schnorr signature scheme will improve bitcoin’s consensus algorithm and provide a higher level of mathematical correctness.

Digital Dollar Project (DDP) announced five pilot programs for a Federal Reserve-issued central bank digital currency (CBDC). The programs are expected to launch throughout 2021. More: DDP is a non-profit organization partnered with Accenture to research the possibility of a digital dollar in the U.S. DDP was co-founded by former CFTC chairman J. Christopher Giancarlo, who wants to make the U.S. a “leader in setting standards for the digital future of money.” The U.S. joins China, Japan, and the U.K. in the effort to facilitate the issuance of digital fiat.

🍋 FRESH FUNDING 🍋 Qredo, DeFi/MPC: $11M. The latest seed funding round for the decentralized multi-party computation (MPC) creator was backed by Celsius, Wintermute, Deribit, and others. More: By integrating decentralized custody with MPC, Qredo will allow investors to trade crypto between multiple exchanges seamlessly. Other MPC developers include Fireblocks, a Fidelity-backed company that provides MPC crypto trading services to institutional investors. Unlike Fireblocks, Qredo plans on being entirely decentralized, with a protocol governed through a DAO. Qredo will also let people trade across blockchains without the use of wrapped assets. 16z, Crypto fund: $800M-$1B. After successfully raising capital for a $300M fund in 2018 and a $500M fund last year, Andreessen Horowitz is expected to raise around $1B for his latest cryptocurrency investment fund.
