Crypto derivatives exchange FTX has announced its launch of a new $2B venture capital fund that will invest broadly across crypto and Web3. Amy Wu will come over from Lightspeed Venture Partners to lead the new fund. Wu previously led Lightspeed's gaming and crypto investments, including those into FTX. More: - Wu noted that she and her team of eight are particularly excited about web3 gaming.
- FTX, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Solana Ventures partnered to launch a $100M web3 gaming investment fund back in Nov. 2021
- Wu's relationship with her former employer appears to remain strong as she commented that FTX and Lightspeed will continue.
- Some of FTX's existing investments will be folded into its new fund.
- In addition to leading its new fund, Wu will also manage the company's gaming, M&A, and commercial initiatives.
Zoom out: - FTX will join other global crypto exchanges like Coinbase, Binance, and Kraken in setting up their very own venture capital arm.
- Grace Isford, principal at Canvas Ventures, comments that the influx of corporate crypto VC funds is partly due to the strategic benefits that they could provide the corporate entity.
- One of the strategic benefits these funds provide exchanges is scouting for potential acquisitions.
- Wu's experience and leadership over FTX's M&A efforts and ventures strengthens this proposition.
