Canadian Markets The Canadian government signed a deal to secure Volkswagen's first gigafactory outside of Europe. - Canada has agreed to give the German carmaker up to $13B in subsidies over the next decade.
- The agreement illustrates how countries might be forced to make big concessions to compete with the U.S., where President Joe Biden last year unveiled generous subsidies for cleantech companies.
- The contract is conditional on the Inflation Reduction Act remaining in force in the U.S. If a new president were to cut the incentive schemes introduced by the legislation, Canada's subsidies would decline proportionately.
